It is the purpose of the Lakeside Baptist Church Weekday Education Ministry to assist parents in the social, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual development of their children. It is our belief that a Christian environment enhances this development process. Believing that all children are special in God's eye, with individual personalities, our goal is to help each child obtain his/her full potential. We believe in love, laughter, and learning at Lakeside by nurturing self-confidence through creative activities and exploration of the world around us. We are hopeful our parents will become part of the Lakeside family or feel welcome to turn to our church in times of crisis. Feel free to contact us at (205) 823-2580.
Learning and Growing
The four and five year old children have an opportunity to participate in weekly computer classes. The children learn computer technology and general use of computers. Math and language skills are enhanced through this medium. Spanish, a second language, is also taught. Puppetry, story telling, videos on a big screen television, and checking out books enhance the learning experience through our Media Center. The Mother's Day Out and Kindergarten participate in Music classes weekly. This enables the children to be creative and spontaneous for free expression and enhanced learning. Children participate in Christmas and Graduation Musical Programs.
Our Curriculum
The curriculum for Lakeside's Kindergarten and Mother's Day Out programs is a unique blend of the best materials and resources available for young children. Through this curriculum, we strive to education and encourage our children to reach their fullest potential throughout life.
MDO The Mother's Day Out uses a well rounded program of socialization, free expression, creative activities, story telling, music, and movement. The classes participate in unit themes and High Reach Curriculum.
THREE YEARS The three year olds use a coordinated program for the "Young Child", by Bernice Taylor as well as the "Wee Learn". The curriculum is divided into thematic units appropriate for learning. The 3K program uses story telling, association perception activities and cooking.
FOUR YEARS Curriculum for the 4 year olds consists of a multi-sensory, multimedia beginning language arts program by Frog Street Press. Thematic units are enhanced by the "activities approach" to learning. In addition, Mathematics Their Way is used to develop math skills.
FIVE YEARS The five year old kindergarten classes use the "Beginning" Reading Readiness Phonics curriculum and Math in My World by McGraw Hill. The learning experience for the five year old includes: beginning reading, phonics, beginning writing, listening, cooperative skills, sequence skills and reasoning.
Special Opportunities
Parents and children participate in the annual Book Fair/Open House for the purpose of placing books in the classrooms in honor or memory of a child. The Art Show is presented annually in order that parents may visit the classrooms and see the wonderful things made by their children. The three year olds present a Christmas Program each year in song along with the Christmas Story. The five year olds graduate in cap and gown, while the four year olds help by presenting "A Look Back".
Beginning each school year at Lakeside, coats and warm clothing are donated from the parents and presented to children in the inner city. Shortly after this mission project ends, the classes begin bringing "food items" to feed "TOM TURKEY". Each item of food donated represents a colored feather that is placed on the classroom wall to enhance Tom's plumage. Near Christmas, Lakeside puts up its Angel Tree. Each Angel represents a needy child and items are donated and distributed at Christmas time.
Extended Hours
The Lakeside Kindergarten and Mother's Day Out ministries provide extra hours each day for all its children who are at the walking stage. These extra hours are 8:00 AM to 9:30 and 1:30 PM to 4:00. The extra hours of this additional service ministry are reasonably priced and give the children an opportunity for nap time (younger children), snacks, and free play! Lakeside enjoys two state of the art play sites. The larger playground is equipped with Lil Tykes© play structures and has its own adjacent rest room and water fountain. The Tot Lot is for children 2 years and younger. Both play areas are safety inspected on a regular basis.
